Did you know that Battenhall has a bowling green hidden away on St Dunstan’s Crescent? I’m slightly embarrassed to say that despite being a local councillor for last 5 years I had never been to investigate what happens at our local club. My father died about a month ago and I have fond memories of playing a few games with him when I was very young probably over 40 years ago – it’s funny how big life events dredge up and perhaps recreate old memories.

I introduced myself to the club to find out more and I thought I’d share my experience. Last week I joined Ray Owen, President of the club for a lovely ½ hour to introduce me to the game. Everyone I met was very friendly and welcoming. Bowling can be just a friendly way to meet friends or it can be a really competitive game taken incredibly seriously with inter club county and national championships.

The game may still have a reputation for being an older persons game and the bowling clubs often struggle to get younger people to take up the game. However in reality the sport is ideal for anyone that doesn’t like contact sports, also for people with limited abilities for example those with poor eyesight and amputees, etc.

It costs an initial £20 to join plus an annual fee of about £80. If you want to try out a few games for free that is fine – who knows you might pick up the bug too!
